Appearance is not the opposite of substance. It is one of the ways substance becomes visible.
A face, a room, a city, a uniform, a watch, or a badly chosen jacket is never entirely mute. These things communicate judgment, aspiration, belonging, authority, taste—and sometimes deception.
Appearance & Reality examines those signals: how we interpret them, how they affect opportunity and desire, and how a person can use appearance deliberately without becoming a polished copy of everyone else.
Expect essays on style and beauty, but also on ambition, status, cities, class, taste, conformity, personal authority and the strange social power of looking as though you belong—or conspicuously do not.
This is not a shopping newsletter
You will not find endless trend reports, lists of “must-have” products or instructions to buy an expensive brand so other people assume you are successful.
Brands can reveal purchasing power. They cannot reveal character.
The more interesting question is how appearance can become coherent with the person behind it: recognisable, deliberate and difficult to confuse with anyone else.
Some essays will be practical. Others will investigate the cultural and psychological forces that shape what we find beautiful, respectable, vulgar, powerful or desirable.

I am an image consultant and the creator of Strategic Image Intensive. I help ambitious professionals look at their level without looking like everyone else.
My interest in appearance began with something I once wanted to hide. As a child, I was bullied for the high contrast of my complexion. Years later, that same contrast became the foundation of my style and eventually of my professional philosophy.
What makes someone conspicuous is not always a flaw to correct. Often, it is the quality that should be understood, refined and made deliberate.
My background includes marketing, public relations, tourism, fashion business, image consulting and cultural journalism. This publication is where those interests meet.
